If your car was booted
The City boots vehicles with more than $350 in parking or camera judgment debt. To get the boot off you pay the judgment plus fees, which can include:
- Boot fee
- Sheriff's or marshal's execution fee ($80)
- Poundage fee (5% of fines, penalties and interest)
You can pay online, by calling the number on the boot notice, or in person at a Department of Finance business center. After paying you get a release code to unlock the boot yourself; it must be returned within 24 hours or late fees apply.
Move fast: if the judgment isn't paid within two business days of booting, the car can be towed.
If your car was towed
- NYPD tow (illegal parking, or no valid registration/insurance): pay the tow fees. You don't have to pay unrelated tickets unless they're in judgment — with $101 or more in judgment, the car is held until it's resolved.
- Marshal or sheriff tow (after a boot): you must pay the full judgment debt, including penalties and interest.
Typical charges: $185 for a regular tow ($370 heavy-duty), plus $20 per night in storage. Bring a valid driver's license, the original registration or title, and proof of current insurance. Cars not claimed within 10 business days can be sold at auction.
Can you fight the tickets behind the boot?
Sometimes. Tickets in judgment for less than a year may still get a hearing if you have a valid defense and a good reason you didn't respond. Dismissing even a few tickets can drop you under the $350 boot limit. Learn more about tickets in judgment.
